Poi comes from an ancient New Zealand practice
intended to increase the flexibility and strength
of the hands and arms - the 'poi' referring to the 'ball'
at the end of the chord to which ribbons were attached.
Poi swinging is an entertaining form of traditional
dance that has a great many variations and histories
among the different tribal groups of New Zealand.
